Hello!

Welcome to a short but sweet (maybe long and savoury...) guide on learning how to solo monsters for EXP and fun on your Black Mage! I'm writing this guide with the aim to give first timers and novice Black Mages insight into how to play their job effectively in a solo (or duo) situation.

If you're a seasoned pro at soloing, this guide probably isn't for you. However, you may find it interesting to compare your methods of solo play with mine, and please don't hesitate to point something out that I might have missed, or a better technique to further enhance your playing style & fun.

So, let us begin...

Lesson 1:
Preparation is everything!

Before you head straight out to your favourite camp (more about suggested camps later), check you have the necessary gear, sub job, food or even items.

Now, just before you head off out into the world, to solo some beasties, if this is your first time soloing, or you haven't played the job in a long time, it's time to...

Lesson 1.1:
Check your gear.

Now, since this section has the potential to be extremely large, and will clutter up the main page, I'm going to use a cut. So, if you want some advice on what gear I would suggest you bring with you.

Lesson 1.2:
Useful Utilities.

So, you've gotten everything to do with your gear in order, you've probably made your macros, and now you're probably wonder what the hell else you can prepare. So, let me enlighten you...

Lesson 2:
Lets get down to business...

Here are some general tactics for soloing that you should employ on your Black Mage.

So, that was my (longer than I thought it would be) guide to soloing as a BLM. I'm hope you learnt something from reading it, and please, spread the love, teach every Black Mage how to play their job properly.

Cheers,
Blabj

As per usual I've been up to not alot, I recently upgraded my PC so I've been busy getting everything back to how I'm used to it. You'll notice this post wont include much pictures, thats because my computer currently lacks Photoshop and Fireworks, so I can't really do much except post some huge 1200x1024 screenshots!

Ingame, I haven't been up to alot. I had an awesome merit party with Boondocksaint (among others!) we kicked the shit out of some Colibris and bugards and I ended up with capped EXP on my RDM and about 3 merits to boot! Very fun!

I also did two runs of dynamis, as usual, on monday there wasn't many drops and then we wiped during the dragon kiting part right at the end (we were on Beaucedine) on Thursday we also did Beaucedine for the win, we got a couple of 100 coins, and some AF (lolDRG, DRK and WHM are the peices I remember, not quite sure what else...)

Yeah...
Bye!

Not alot to report, did some AU missions with my new Assault/Salvage static, the ToAU missions are really cool. They're easy and mainly cutscene based, which means they have alot more story considering they're as easy as doing normal quests.

Gotta fight Khimaira 13 soon, which is gonna be fun, I'll have screenshots of that.

Ciao

What an interesting weekend!

After being inspired to do a little bit of meleeing with Rashyyyk (See 'Kraken Club Fun' post) I decided it was once again time for me to upgrade my sword to something a little better (although, Mensur Epee still kicks complete ass)

I've always wanted a Joyeuse, ever since seeing videos of RDM/NINs playing with them (I didn't even have RDM leveled when I saw those videos, I just knew I wanted one badly!) So, I got my facts straight on about Charybdis and headed down to Sea Serpent's Grotto to obtain a ToD. Thankfully, I wont bore you with millions of screenshots of other people killing place holders, as I never saw Charybdis spawn that night. I had heard Acts was also camping for his Joyeuse, and when he came down to the grotto later that night, I teamed up with him for a bit, to hopefully claim charybdis, but like I said, we had no luck on that part. He said he'd keep me informed with a ToD via Erindil, and true to his word when I logged on in the morning there was a message from Athilorian, passed on from Erindil telling me that Chary was due to spawn sometime that morning.

So, after hanging around and watching some more JPs kill place holders, he eventually spawned. After a rock start, they eventually killed him and I got my ToD I needed for later that evening.

So, once the time had passed, I assembled a rag-tag posse of friends and foes (Akron!!) to head down in hopes of having some luck spawning Chary.

Hours passed when all of a sudden he spawns, and with no competition we get the claim and beat him into submission!!!

Joyeuse Drop

Yay! Smiley

Hurray!

So here's my thanks!

Thank you Rashyyyk & Labebe for letting me skillup with them these past days, and for being really nice and friendly to me, and for helping a taru get his sexy sword!

Thank you Skurvy, for logging in randomly while Rashy was controlling your character, and providing something interesting to talk about for 30 mins or so! Smiley

Thank you Rutork for coming down and helping me, and for being the gay galka who loves high school musical!

And last and most least, thank you Akron, for continuing the tradition of being a gimp BLM! (Only kidding, I love you really Akron!)

As promised to Hmkiroko, a video of me soloing an Aura Statue.

Now, any more suggestions? :D

I said on QCDN, I'd rather not solo anything level capped just yet, as my capped gear and macros are rather lack luster.

Also, if you'd like a copy of my macros feel free to pm me on qcdn, or add me to msn, or email me, or leave a comment with your email address. They're pretty spiffy windower macros.

So one day, I was sitting around in Aht Urhgan Whitegate, when I recieve an interesting /tell from a friend of mine who goes by the name of Rashyyyk. At first he starts with the usual banter, "Hey, whats up?" but soon cuts into the nitty gritty and asks me if I wanted to skill up. I think to myself, my red mage has some seriously under leveled melee stats, so I could go to level up club, sword or dagger... But, just as I'm about to accept Rashy's offer, he sweetens the deal by saying he has a Kraken Club, and that I'd be able to get a go, if I so wished.

As you can imagine, this was some incentive, so I quickly change from BLM to RDM and pickup all the melee gear I can find on in the chasms of my mog house, and we head off into Kuftal tunnel. Once we arrive, we find a spot where there wont be many EXP partys, and just as we've started, Rashy offers to trade with me, and instantly my eyes light up, because I have a sneaking feeling I know what he'll be offering...

Stats on RDM Melee gear

That's quite possibly the greatest feeling of all, having such a rare and expensive piece of gear willfully handed to you to go nuts with! So I slap on a low delay dagger, haste myself and cast enthunder and off we go, to bash in some crabs!

The money shot

The skillups with the kraken are huge, you don't realise how much that thing hits till you swap back to single hit weapons and you seem dissapointed that your TP pool hasn't gone up by 50% in one round of attacks. But soon, both me and Rashy reach a club level that doesn't skill up very well on these crabs any more, so we hit Valley of sorrows for about 10 minutes, before deciding theres more fish (crabs) to be had in the boyhada tree. So, I warp, Rashy explodes, and we go back to Aht urhgan whitegate for a while to recouperate and buy some more food, and in my case, new gears.

I'd heard of a sword called a Mensur Epee which, by the effects it has, seemed a very good weapon to buy for our little duo skilling up session. And lemme tell you, it was definately worth the 800k. It hits hard, even with my low STR, and fast, and is much better than my previous weapon, a Dissector with a locked latent effect ><

Spirits Within

So we get to the tree, and after a little bit of problem with hitting the monsters, I soon reach a level where I can hit the crabs well. And before I know it, I've unlocked Spirits Within, and capped my club skill, with help from Rashy and his wonderful club of joy! We worked out I must have gone from around 145 to 210 in a single day, and Rashy had gone from 184 to 200, and got plenty of skillups on his hand to hand and swords also!

All in all, a great day!
